On April 3, 1860, Johnny Fry and Billy Hamilton carried a bag of mail to be delivered from Missouri to California. They became known as the first Pony Express riders. The horseman HAD to be the finest, and the steeds needed to be the BEST. They had to get to California within 10 days. Do you know how they got there so fast on horseback? The Pony Express depended on the relay system. It's like a relay race. The rider goes for a full 75 miles before handing the job to the next rider and horse. The rider had to change horses after 10 to 12 miles. Even though the Pony Express lasted for only 18 months, the team carried a total of 35,000 letters!
