Sometime during the 1830s, a man named Samuel F. B. Morse tried to send messages using electricity along iron wires. The first lines of the telegraph went from Baltimore, Maryland to Washington D.C. The first messege by telegraph went from Washington D.C. to Maryland. It read,"What hath God wrought?" Messages by telegraph took only a few minutes.

Samuel Morse also invented how to communicate using the telegraph. He invented the Morse Code. In this code he used dots and dashes to make letters. The dashes were dots held down, and the dots were just pressed. The telegraph is what ended the Pony Express.
