Did you know that more than 3,000 minerals have been discovered on Earth’s surface. Minerals are solid crystals found in nature. They all share the same chemical make-up no matter where they are. People use minerals everyday. For example, Talc is used as baby powder. Minerals aren’t rocks. Rocks are made up of two or more minerals. Now, mineral ores are different than minerals. They are rocks that contain valuable metals like copper, galena, lead and hematite. These can be used for many different reasons. Some examples are X-ray aprons, used to protect you from harmful radiation,or pipes that water can flow through. These rocks aren't that easy to find. Ores can be removed from Earth’s surface. It is called the crust. The crust contains soil, clay, rocks, and many other materials.Since the minerals and metals in mineral ores are so useful, many mines are still drilling for ores right now to sell!
