A microorganism is a living thing that is too small to be seen without a microscope. Bacteria and some types of fungi are microorganisms.

Worms and small insects eat microorganisms. Pond or ocean water can contain ten thousand tiny organisms called protists. Most protists only have one cell. Some protists are producers. Algae is one of them. These protists are the main producers of food in the freshwater ecosystem.

Cows, buffalo, and other herbivores have bacteria that help them digest grass and other plants. As you can see, some microorganisms are not only very tiny, most are also very helpful.
