Animals defend their territory or area. They compete for food, water, and living space in a territory. Animals have special behaviors to claim and defend their territory. It's easier for animals to survive in their own, familiar territory. Birds defend their area by strutting, singing, or by spreading their wings wide. They also dive down at approaching animals. These behaviors help animal populations survive.
