Biddy Mason was born in a slave state on a Georgia plantation that belonged to Robert Smith in 1818. Soon she became a slave of Robert Smith. Then Smith moved his household to San Bernardino in California. When Smith wanted to move to Texas, another slavery state, Biddy Mason refused to go, and she wanted to be free. In 1856, the courts granted freedom to Mason.

For the first time of her life, Mason worked for herself. Soon she got a job in California as a nurse. She bought land in California which now is downtown Los Angeles. She made a fortune by selling and renting land. She used the mouney that she earned to help others and build churches.
